NARRATIVE FOR STANDARD FOUR
Melbourne Central Catholic High School has resources and provides services that support the future success of its students in college and beyond. Administration follows set procedures in order to ensure qualified faculty and staff are hired. Clearly defined job descriptions have been developed and communicated so that all understand their responsibilities. These are reviewed annually. In almost all areas there is sufficient professional and support staff as well as material, media and information resources.
One area where more staff would be beneficial to all constituents is in the area of technology. Consideration should be given to hiring more desktop support so that both faculty and staff can utilize more technology and most importantly technology can get into the hands of students. Professional development for faculty and staff is also critical and increased financial resources need to be focused to make this implementation a reality. Once more technology staff and professional development on integrating technology is realized, more fiscal resources should be directed towards purchasing additional technology. When technology is purchased for classroom use, care should be given to consult teachers. Areas for teacher input include types of technology needed, furniture needs associated with technology as well as actual physical location in the classroom setting. One area of technology that is currently exemplary is the number of online databases to which students and teachers have access. In addition, the guidance department has implementing Naviance Succeed Family Connections, a new college and career readiness computer based program for students and parents.
The daily schedule has been evaluated and a change was made from block scheduling to a traditional seven-period day. Later in a model of continuous improvement a further change was determined necessary and the schedule included an eighth period. This is the current schedule used. This was done to give students more access to Fine Arts classes as well as other college prep electives. All constituent groups report overall satisfaction with the amount of instructional time.
Melbourne Central Catholic High School has a risk management committee that meets monthly to evaluate potential areas of risk. Our school follows a Diocesan-based risk management manual that covers procedures for all types of crises from hurricanes to intruder on campus. Safety drills including fire drills are conducted on a regular basis and all state and local safety laws are followed.
Students have access to a wide range of support services to be sure their academic as well as emotional needs are met. A newly-renovated learning lab is available for students who need remediation and help developing effective study skills. Due to recently added international students, an office dedicated to ensuring their unique needs are met has been added. College placement counselors as well as general guidance counseling is sufficient for the number of students. Support staff for guidance is also sufficient to complete the tasks of the department without taxing the guidance counselors unnecessarily. This is evidenced by the overwhelming high parental and student satisfaction with guidance overall.
